Martina Navratilova To Climb Mt Kilimanjaro For Charity Despite Cancer

Former tennis star Martina Navratilova will attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa for charity – despite being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The retired player plans to climb Africa’s highest peak in December for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, an organization that uses sport to aid positive social change through the pursuit of excellence, overcoming challenges, celebrating achievement and excellence, and winning against the odds.

“[Cancer] does make you take [a] pause and re-evaluate, make sure that you’re doing everything you want to do in life, and I am,” she said on British TV show Loose Women. [“I’m doing the climb] for Laureus, I’m a member of the Laureus Academy and we have a Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. We try and raise money for that and so I’m climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I spend a lot of time in Kenya and Tanzania, so I’m looking forward to that… I’m hoping to make it to the top.”

Klitschko Gives At-Risk Children A Fighting Chance

Boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko is donating at least half a million dollars to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation programs for at-risk children in New York’s Bronx.

The Laureus Foundation offers a range of activities for local, disadvantaged children. Before learning to box, the children learn life skills and values, and participate in academic enrichment programs. They are also provided with a positive place to escape from the harsh realities of a depressed home and street life where absentee parents, substance abuse, and domestic violence are common.

Klitschko’s gift to Laureus comes from two sources. The first $350,000 comes from his fan base, who responded to his offer to embellish the robe he would wear for his championship heavyweight fight with the names of all who donated to Laureus in his name. A further $150,000 has already been offered for the robe, under auction until next month, and is expected to rise.

Dacor Taste of Tennis

On August 23, 2007, at the W Hotel in New York, over 400 food, wine and tennis fans convened for the Dacor Taste of Tennis Food and Wine event to benefit the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

Coinciding with the launch of the 2007 US Open, the event featured tennis stars such as Andy Roddick, Tommy Haas and Rafael Nadal as they traded in their rackets for aprons and joined forces with some of the world’s top chefs in cooking demonstrations. Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson and more than a dozen top-ranked restaurants – Amalia, The Palm, Barbounia, Anthos, davidburke&donatella – all had chefs on hand to prepare mouthwatering dishes such as mini crab cakes with Aleppo mayonnaise and braised short ribs with sea salt and butterscotch-carrot puree.

Aquavit chef Marcus Samuelsson, whose new African restaurant opens in October, guided Roddick through the culinary process of making mango, raisin and jalapeño couscous with Moroccan-spiced lamb. Guest enjoyed stations and bars set up by Rums of Puerta Rico, Pilsner and Palm Bay Imports, while players participated in cooking demonstrations and mingled with guests in lounges spread throughout the hotel.
