Chef Ramsay Appeals For Help

The Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA) is getting a little help from an old friend. Honorary patron Gordon Ramsay will host his Appeal for the Scottish Spina Bifida Association in Edinburgh on June 7 at the Hilton Edinburgh Airport.

“It’s an amazing charity,” commented Ramsay. “But sadly, they receive less than 3 per cent of their funding from the government and have to raise over $987,000 annually to ensure that they can continue to support everyone who approaches them for help.”

A three-course dinner will be served, complete with champagne and dancing, with all proceeds going to the Spina Bifida Association. Last year, on the 26th November, Ramsay made history as he hosted his first ever St Andrew’s Day Gala Dinner, with his wife Tana, in aid of the Scottish Spina Bifida Association. The event raised a staggering $266,500 for the Association.

It was a humbling experience for celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay when he met brave children suffering from spina bifida. Known for raising hell in the kitchen, the volcanic star showed a more angelic side as he and his wife Tana played with children during a visit to a charity centre in Scotland. Ramsay vows to work with the Scottish Spina Bifida Association for the rest of his life.

“I flew in from LA last night with all the stresses of filming Hell’s Kitchen and working in the restaurants over there,” said Ramsay the day after his November 25 visit. “But the minute I set foot in the centre, all that was just forgotten.”

Ramsay has been a part of the charity for four years now and finds it to be an incredible experience. He was also happy his wife could behold the children’s zeal on this trip.

“The spirit for life that these kids have is extraordinary. Every time I come here, I tell my wife how much I enjoy it, and now she has finally been able to see this for herself”

Among the children Ramsay spent time with on his visit were twins, Chloe and Jade. Chloe does not have the condition but her sister Jade is paralyzed from the waist down. The condition doesn’t stop Jade; instead, she has pressed on by continuing to practice Taekwondo to the extent of earning a yellow belt, and she also plays the violin.

“Like Jade, my daughter Megan plays violin,” said Ramsey. “So I’ve promised to bring her up here next time so the two of them can play together.”

The twins’ parents are grateful to Chef Ramsay. Likewise, he is committed to raising funds for the charity. Ramsay wants to encourage others to get involved by calling the Scottish Spina Bifida Association on 01236 794 505 to make a donation.

“This charity is my charity and it’s part of my life now. The hard thing is finding half a million pounds a year to keep this place functioning. Join me in making a donation – no matter how large or small the amount, it will help Scotland’s families when they need it most.”
