Classic Calgary Flames Reunite For MusiCares

As part of the Juno Awards Weekend events, members of the 1989 Calgary Flames will be lacing up their skates to reunite for a charity game that pits them against a team of celebrity rockers. The Juno Cup, presented by The Keg Steakhouse & Bar, will take place in Stampede Park on Friday, April 4th, at 7:30 p.m. (MST) in Calgary, Alberta. It will benefit MusiCan, the charitable arm of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS).

“Each year, more and more NHL alumni, musicians, and celebrities are enthusiastically lending their time in support of MusiCan,” said Melanie Berry, CARAS President. “It’s always exciting to see local fans react to seeing their hockey heroes and favourite musicians play together – an unlikely match-up that’s always an entertaining event.”

Calgary won its only Stanley Cup championship in 1989, and reuniting members Lanny McDonald, Colin Patterson, Doug Gilmour, and Jamie Macoun will be joined by veteran players Bob Probert, Brad Dalgarno, Mark Napier, Mike Pelyk, Paul Coffey, and Russ Courtnall for a two-period match as part of a weekend of celebrations leading up to the Juno Awards on April 6.

Sarah McLachlan Performs For MusiCan

Sarah McLachlan, one of Canada’s most celebrated female singer/songwriters, performed for Vancouver schoolchildren last week in support of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ music education charity, MusiCan.

MusiCan, an organization that “keeps music alive” by giving grants, awards and scholarships, donated $10,000 each to seven schools in the Vancouver area, including the school where McLachlan performed. The money will be used to buy instruments for their music programs. As well as playing three of her own songs, a jazz band from one of the schools and elementary students from another were able to play on stage with McLachlan.

“As a champion of Canadian music education initiatives, it is an honour to have Sarah McLachlan here at our first Vancouver MusiCan presentation,” said Srinka Wallia, Executive Director of MusiCan. “Music education is a vital part of our youth’s development. MusiCan is committed to providing opportunity and nurturing creativity in young Canadians.”
