Charlize Theron To Take Part In Charity Photography Lecture

Charlize Theron will take part in a special lecture behind the scenes of a photography exhibition in LA tonight to benefit the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project (CTAOP).

This special Tuesday evening lecture is a personal, in-depth and behind the scenes tour of the images in photographer Randall Slavin’s project “REACH: 24 portraits by Randall Slavin to benefit the CTAOP.” REACH is a collection of previously unseen portraits of some of the most influential names of our time including Clint Eastwood, Eddie Vedder, Kobe Bryant and Bill Clinton. Theron will introduce Slavin and re-join the discussion during the Q&A portion of the presentation.

Theron serves as a United Nations Messenger of Peace and launched the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) in 2007 with the aid of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Nicole Richie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Dylan were some of the stars to join Charlize Theron at a fundraising dinner in West Hollywood on Tuesday, April 27.

The stars gathered at Soho House to raise funds for the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project, an initiative created by the actress to create a safer, healthier and better life for impoverished children and their families in South Africa.

“We started [the project] with so little and thought, ‘What is this really going to change?’ And 18 months later I went back and there were about eight faces that I knew we affected and changed their lives,” said Charlize. “For me, going there when we launched, it was eye-opening that the things we take for granted are not the things that you can expect in rural communities in South Africa. Nelson Mandela came out of this area. How can you not invest? I always say even if you can only send two dollars and you don’t think that’s gonna make a difference, trust me, it does make a difference.”

Charlize Theron has blogged in the Huffington Post about the possibility of change in South Africa.

“The first time I ever visited the Umkhanyakude district in South Africa was to celebrate the launch of the initial Mpilonhle mobile health unit, which my charity — the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project — helped to fund,” wrote the UN Messenger of Peace. "Mpilonhle is an organization that provides innovative health and education programs to this rural district’s schools and communities. Run by Dr. Michael Bennish, Mpilonhle uses mobile health units to treat individuals’ medical, psychological, and sociological needs. This care would not otherwise be available in these areas due to the extreme level of poverty.

“The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project develops awareness, generates supporting funds, and participates in the enhancement of Mpilonhle’s medical units and mobile computer labs. The beauty of the units is that they bring resources to communities that have no means of transportation and are miles away from health services. Mpilonhle’s computer labs provide basic computer literacy to students and community members. Through the work CTAOP and Mpilonhle are doing together, many local individuals, especially children, are seeing doctors and experiencing technology for the very first time.”

Charlize Theron Designs Shoes For Charity

Charlize Theron and Blake Mycoskie, founder of the accessory line Toms Shoes, have co-designed a limited edition men’s and women’s collection to celebrate the donation of over 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in Theron’s native country of South Africa.

These shoes are inspired by the South African baobab tree and have been made from vegan materials. The tree pattern is embroidered over dyed canvas and is available in blue and orange. The shoes are also lined with the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project’s logo.

In 2010, South Africa will be hosting the tournament, and Theron is looking forward to being a part of the celebration.

Her African Outreach charity is raising funds to build soccer fields in different areas throughout Africa. Rural kids are the inspiration behind building the fields. Theron wants them to be able to have nice places to play.

Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron, Jeremy Piven, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, David Arquette, Mia Hamm, Nomar Garciaparra, Laila Ali and more helped raise funds and awareness for charitable causes.

The evening featured keynote speaker Vicki Escarra, CEO of Feeding America, along with a special headline performance from Snow Patrol. Actress Charlize Theron has designed a new T-Shirt to be sold exclusively for her African Outreach Program.

The star has teamed up with Give And Take Tees – a company that gives a large percentage of its profits to charity – to create the shirts to help her project, which provides funding to help impoverished families affected by HIV and Aids.

“The kids that are being helped through my African Outreach Project are so incredible and vibrant – these t-shirts capture the spirit of South Africa and give everyone a way to help,” she said.

The Charlize Theron African Outreach Project and the LAFC Chelsea Soccer Club have joined forces to give kids living in underserved communities – in Southern California and Umkhanyakude District of the KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa – more opportunities to play competitive soccer.

This new collaboration will be made official during the upcoming match on July 21, between two of the world’s top international teams – Chelsea FC and Inter Milan. These soccer powerhouses, who have not competed in the United States for fifteen years, will face off in front an expected 90,000 fans at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, and will be televised world-wide on ESPN. Net proceeds from this spectacular match will benefit LAFC Chelsea, one of America’s most successful and prominent youth soccer clubs.

The fundraising event will help continue LAFC Chelsea’s mission to give economically challenged youth living in Southern California real opportunities to play competitive soccer as a means to keeping them in school through graduation. Fresh from her appointment as a UN Messenger of Peace, actress Charlize Theron has announced that a beautiful new piece of jewelry will go under the hammer next year to benefit her African Outreach Program.

Italian jeweller Breil – who the actress turned to after an out-of-court settlement with Raymond Weil – will auction off a white gold 27.93-carat champagne diamond pave Breil Milano Battio heart pendant next year. Raymond Weil sued Theron in February 2007 and alleged she broke an exclusivity agreement by wearing other companies’ watches during her contract.

The Charlize Theron African Outreach Project works to better the lives of impoverished families and children living in Theron’s native South Africa, especially those touched by HIV/AIDS.

Oscar award winning actress Charlize Theron’s next role will be that of a United Nations Messenger of Peace.

Last Friday, UN spokesman Farhan Haq made the announcement that Theron will be inducted on Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Haq added that she “will have responsibilities for promoting UN efforts to fight violence against women around the world”.

Honoring Theron for her work towards ending violence towards women, as well as the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project, whose goal is to promote HIV/AIDS education for impoverished children and their families in South Africa, Ki-moon stated “You have used your voice, compassion and special relationship with the public to create a better world.”

Hollywood Domino is the new craze sweeping the world, and two launch events over the weekend attracted stars from across the celebrity spectrum to raise money for charity.

Screen star Charlize Theron is bringing life saving information to rural kids in KwaZulu-Natal, a province that holds the unfortunate record of the highest HIV infection rate in South Africa.

Where sex, teenage pregnancy, rape and HIV are taboo topics and half of all females are expected to contract AIDS, 10 percent of them before graduating high-school, Theron created the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project and partnered with Oprah’s Angel Network to assist the charity Mpilonhle in bringing education, free condoms, HIV testing and treatment to the kids via a mobile health and computer clinic.

Theron says, “Medical staff told me many students here have lost one or both parents to AIDS. The mobile clinic is one of the few places offering help, guidance and a safe place to talk.”

Charlize Theron hosted an auction on June 27th to raise money for children in her native South Africa. The event in Los Angeles drew the support of other Hollywood celebrities, and raised $140,000 to help families in need.

The auction was attended by stars such as Lindsay Lohan, and items up for auction included a jacket from Will Smith, signed DVDs from Tom Hanks and an original Scarface poster donated by Al Pacino.

The Charlize Theron African Outreach Project benefits Oprah’s Angel Network and helps support vulnerable children in rural South Africa.
