Bella Thorne And Jordin Sparks Support School Supply Drive

For Back to School, this summer Staples and DoSomething.org partnered again to help bring school supplies to students.

The Fifth Annual Staples For Students School Supply Drive encouraged teens to help collect school supplies for their local classmates. From July 1 to September 15, teens have been collecting and donating pencils, notebooks and everything else school-friendly to Staples stores across the US, each of which has partnered up with local organizations to distribute these supplies to local kids who need them the most. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America is the major beneficiary.

This year’s celebrity spokesperson: Bella Thorne. She understands the value of education and its power to uplift the world — despite her dyslexia. The campaign’s previous supporters include Jordin Sparks, Ciara, Nikki Reed and the cast of Pretty Little Liars.

Join Victoria Justice And Do Something Against Bullying

DoSomething.org has had it with bullying and the adults who don’t stand up and do something. With the help of spokesperson Victoria Justice and the much buzzed about documentary, Bully – released in theaters March 30th – DoSomething.org is giving teens a chance to address the realities of bullying in their schools and identify ways to make a change through the first ever student-led nationwide bullying census.

When bullying is witnessed, teens only intervene 11% of the time, while adults interfere even less so. Shockingly, most of the time there is NO intervention. Instead of continuing on the trend of issuing statistics gleaned from adult insights, DoSomething.org is finally lending a voice to those directly affected by bullying: the teens themselves.

Running through May, and acting as the kick-off initiative for the BULLY film social action campaign, DoSomething.org’s Bully Project urges students to speak up about bullying via a short Facebook quiz. The questions were created for teens by teens – namely those in DoSomething.org’s Youth Advisory Council, comprised of 200 young people across the country. Once completed, the students will get immediate results stating how their school is rated against the nationwide average, and they are encouraged to share the census and results with all of their Facebook friends. The census has been vetted by experts who develop sustainable solutions to bullying, and who are advising on how to use the data in meaningful, empirical ways to bring about lasting change.

Eliza Dushku: Do Something For The Child Soldiers

DoSomething.org is highlighting Eliza Dushku's fight on behalf of child soldiers in Uganda.

Eliza’s mother, Judy, founded THARCE-Gulu to provide Trauma Healing and Reflection for former child soldiers and victims of war in the Gulu District in northern Uganda. The pair visited the area to view the effects of men like Joseph Kony are having on the 30,000 Ugandan child soldiers who have been kidnapped from their families and forced to commit atrocities too violent and demeaning to comprehend.

From DoSomething.org: "A particular chilling account comes from Rose, now a young woman, who at the age of 10 or 11 became the wife of Kony’s second in command. She told Eliza he was “a big man” and sometimes he was kind, but also had "rage and often kicked or beat her. " The teen shared that she saw Kony and others cut people into pieces—she was forced to also do this to her friends that were deemed “uncooperative.”

DoSomething.org Launches Water Games

DoSomething.org is gearing up for its first ever Water Games, Walk for Africa Campaign.

Teens will take action and build awareness around the lack of access to clean water in developing nations by organizing water walks in their communities. If they mobilize 15K teens to participate in water walks, they will build a well for a community in Swaziland through support from The Thirst Project.

The extremely popular book series, The Hunger Games – now a movie starring Josh Hutcherson, Jennifer Lawrence and Lenny Kravitz – follows characters living in an oppressed society. The story cleverly introduces the struggles impoverished citizens face from a lack of resources, including water access. This fictional theme mirrors the real-world struggles that millions face in the absence of clean drinking water. By organizing water walks, teens will raise awareness and aid in building a drinking-well for a community in need.

Kelly Clarkson Supports Battle Of The Bands For Music Education

DoSomething.org and the VH1 Save The Music Foundation have teamed up for the third annual “Battle for the Bands” campaign aimed at mobilizing young people to advocate for music education.

The campaign will run from March 1 through April 26th, 2012 and is supported by award-winning singer-songwriter Kelly Clarkson, who filmed a PSA for the campaign that premiered on pop music destination Idolator.com.

 "Battle for the Bands" encourages teens to participate by submitting music videos about the importance of music education or rewriting the lyrics of a favorite classic or pop song. DoSomething.org, in partnership with the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, will create a mash-up of the best videos to present to representatives on Capitol Hill, in Washington DC, ensuring the youth voice has a seat at the table.

DoSomething.org Announces Top 20 Celebs Gone Good 2011

DoSomething.org, one of the largest U.S. organizations that helps teens take action on causes they care about, released today its fourth annual ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ list.

Lady Gaga continues her reign as the star who uses her celebrity to do the most good. Known for her support of gay rights, AIDS, and poverty, she focused primarily this year on bullying, even taking her thoughts to the White House in December. She also announced the creation of her own charity, the Born This Way Foundation, which aims to empower youth and lead them to a brave new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be.

Making a meteoric rise to number two this year is Justin Bieber, up from number 10 last year. His fast rise is due to his prolific work with Pencils of Promise, an organization that builds schools in Laos and Guatemala. Justin is also a consistent supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, raised funds for charity with his fragrance and holiday album, and recently distributed $100,000 to Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas.

Stars To Judge Contest For Arts Education

Make Art, Save Art is a campaign mobilizing young artists nationwide to advocate for the arts by submitting artwork and testimonials on the importance of arts education online at www.makeartsaveart.org and sharing those artistic expressions with their social networks (i.e. Facebook and Twitter).

The top 10 artists with the most shares through social media networks are entered into a finalist pool, and one artist will be selected by a panel of expert judges. The winner will receive a $5,000 grant for their school art program and a $1,000 college scholarship.

Justin Bieber's Under The Mistletoe For Charity

Under The Mistletoe comes out on November 1, and will benefit two of Justin’s favorite charities, Pencils of Promise and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“Universal [Music] never actually allowed money from the album to go to charity, so it’s kind of a unique thing and I’m very happy and proud of what we’ve done,” he said.

Twilight Star Helps With Charity Scavenger Hunt

This summer, over 20,000 teams consisting of more than 70,000 young people got off their beach towels and onto their mobile phones to take action on key social issues impacting their communities. They participated in an 11-day Scavenger Hunt, spearheaded by DoSomething.org and Lenovo to make a difference in their communities, tackling serious issues like poverty and animal welfare.

Teams received daily challenges via text message, social media and e-mail. Sample challenges included donating school supplies for underserved kids and setting up an e-mail address for a senior citizen. 18,500 individual actions were reported via text message alone.

“The Scavenger Hunt was a great way to become introduced to and involved with a variety of important causes. It was awesome to rally around causes as a team, and so empowering to be a part of a nationwide movement,” said teen participant, Sarah Cronk. “Receiving updates on my phone made the hunt especially fun and easy because I could complete challenges and report back while on the go.”
