Monique Coleman To Attend Girl Up Summit This Weekend

The UN Foundation's Girl Up campaign will hold its first-ever Girl Up Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. this weekend, bringing together celebrities, women leaders, and hundreds of teens from across the country in an event that will equip girls in the United States with the leadership skills necessary to support girls around the world.

Monique Coleman will attend the event, along with 16 Teen Advisors and 100 teens from across the country, as well as teens from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa (via live stream).

At the Girl Up Leadership Summit teen girls will both run and attend workshops run that focus on developing leadership skills in community and school organizing, event planning, advocacy, communications and fundraising – all in effort to raise awareness and take action to help their peers in Malawi, Liberia, Ethiopia, and Guatemala.

Oprah Attends Graduation Of Leadership Students In South Africa

Oprah Winfrey was in South Africa over the weekend to attend the first graduation of 72 students from her Leadership Academy for Girls.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa opened in 2007 with 150 low-income seventh-and-eighth graders, the school now enrolls about 300.

Both Oprah and Graca Machel (humanitarian and wife of Nelson Mandela) addressed the girls at the graduation. Mandela inspired Oprah to open the $40 million school in 2007.

Oprah Awarded Honorary Oscar For Charity Work

Oprah Winfrey was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award – a special Oscar for her charity work – at a dinner in LA on Saturday night.

The award – which in the past has been presented to Jerry Lewis, Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, Sherry Lansing, Quincy Jones, Bob Hope, Audrey Hepburn, Charlton Heston and many others – is named after screen actor Jean Hersholt, who served as the president of the Motion Picture Relief Fund for 18 years.

“I never imagined myself receiving an Oscar, especially for what I’m considering my calling,” she said as she accepted the award. “All of us can make a difference through the life we lead. We’re all here to help each other.”

Oprah Winfrey To Teach Girls In South Africa

Oprah Winfrey has returned from a trip to the school for girls she opened in South Africa, has announced that she will be going back soon… as a teacher.

The media giant has revealed she will be teaching girls at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa a special course titled It’s Life 101.

“Should be fun since I love to teach. And they’re like sponges,” she said. “Like 12th graders everywhere, this first class is both anxious and excited about going to college. Most will be the first in their family. So it’s a very big deal for them, and they’re feeling the pressure.”

Oprah Auctions Clothes to Benefit Leadership Academy

Oprah Winfrey has cleaned out her closet and put dozens of her favorite items up for auction to benefit the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

With the help of O’s creative director, Adam Glassman, Oprah has selected more than 150 items for the auction including the coat she wore to Coppenhagen to lobby for the Olympics to come to Chicago.

The auction on eBay, via Auction Cause, kicks off today, March 1 at 11 a.m. EST.

Oprah opens school for poor in South Africa

Oprah Winfrey has opened the doors of a new school near Johannesburg for poor girls, completing a promise she made to Nelson Mandela six years ago.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa aims to discover, teach and inspire young South African girls to become a new generation of leaders. Having invested $10m initially, Oprah’s investment grew to $40m as the project progressed, and she hopes this will be only the first of many such schools built in impoverished communities around the world.

The academy selects 11-to-13 year-old girls whose family income is less than $700 a month, and Oprah hand-picked the first 75 students in the summer of 2006. The school will eventually cater for 450 students.
