Mia Farrow To Visit Chad And Congo This Weekend

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow will travel to Chad and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a 10-day trip starting Sunday to support a global push to make polio a part of the past.

The visit comes at a pivotal time in the global fight against polio. In January, it was announced that India for the first time reported no new cases of the crippling disease for a full year. Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan are among the last four polio endemic countries, down from 125 in 1988.

Farrow, who had polio as a child, carries the message that the world can learn from the experience of India and further strengthen the collective push for polio eradication – especially following outbreaks in countries that were once polio free, including Chad and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Experts fear that gains made from a massive global health push – which has included 20 million volunteers immunizing 2.5 billion children since 1988 – could be lost, just as the world is on the brink of eradicating the disease.

An important part of fighting polio is to ensure that children have access to clean water, basic sanitation and proper nutrition for them to absorb the vaccine and avoid contracting polio and other diseases.

In Chad, the issue of nutrition is especially urgent. The Sahel region, including parts of Chad, is currently experiencing a food emergency, with some one million children under five in need of life saving treatment in feeding centres. Farrow will travel to the city of Mao to highlight the urgency in providing nutritional support to children and their families who lack food and water due to poor rains and failed harvests.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country that has witnessed years of violent conflict that has claimed the lives of over 5.4 million people, Farrow will visit the Kalemie region before wrapping up her visit in Bukavu in South Kivu.

The internationally acclaimed actor and humanitarian joined UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador in 2000. She continues to be a tireless advocate for the rights of the world’s most vulnerable children, especially those impacted by conflict and violence. This will be Farrow’s 14th trip to Chad and her second trip to the DRC.

Bob Barker Says No To Stampede And Rodeo

Just days after speaking out against The Price Is Right’s recent promotion of the Calgary Stampede and Rodeo, iconic television host Bob Barker has fired off another letter on PETA's behalf to the event’s main sponsors—including Bell Canada, General Motors of Canada Limited, Anheuser-Busch International, and TransAlta Corporation—to urge them to turn their backs on the notoriously violent and deadly rodeo.

In the letter, Barker points out that horses routinely die in the stampede—one had to be euthanized on the first day of last year’s spectacle, and six horses died in 2010’s event alone. Many more sustain painful injuries.

“The Calgary Stampede has long been synonymous with animal abuse,” writes Barker. “I hope you will agree that no animal deserves to suffer like this in the name of a tradition that should have died out with the covered wagon’s last ride. My friends at PETA and I hope to hear that you will no longer sponsor this event.”

French actor Gilles Marini is well known to international audiences, with roles in Sex and the City: The Movie, Brothers & Sisters and for coming second in Season 8 of Dancing With The Stars. LookToTheStars.org recently talked with Gilles about charity and the causes he supports.

What is the criteria for choosing the charities that you so strongly support?
More than criteria, it is the way I feel about the charity. I am always very touched by a charity when they honestly give all their revenue to their cause. It is more and more becoming a business, and a celeb has to be careful by overlooking the way the charity works. In general I like to work with charities that help children, cancer and also animals.

How or why did you choose to get involved?
It is in my heart – I was doing it before and now I am glad to do it even more that I can touch many more. It is I think the best thing you can do as an actor or a celeb. Charity work is crucial!

What is the most annoying thing about people that don’t help? and Why?
It makes no sense. I personally do not know anyone in my entourage that does not help. One huge huge helper of many causes is Donal Logue, a mentor of mine – a fantastic human being. I am not annoyed by those people, because I don’t hang with them – but if I had a chance to have a conversation with one of them, I know I will change their mind.

What plans do you have to make an impact on society this year?
I am going to do my best to make a change to the lives of the less fortunate.

If you could create your own charity, what would it be called and who would it benefit?
Helping families that go through the hard time of having a kid with a deadly disease, like cancer, by making the life of the sick child more comfortable and less worrisome as much as possible. There is nothing worst than losing your kid. I can’t imagine what people have to go through. Maybe the name of the charity will be called: " Life "

Mariah Carey Joins Jenny Craig's Campaign For American Heart Month

Dermot O'Leary Backs Blue Mug Charity Campaign

UK TV and radio personality Dermot O'Leary has given his backing to a campaign launched by Mary's Meals aimed at providing more of the world’s hungriest children with life-changing meals.

The ‘Big Blue Mug’ campaign invites people to get their hands on a bright blue mug – similar to those used to provide Mary’s Meals to children in Malawi, where the organization feeds over 500,000 children every school day.

The plastic mugs are being offered as an alternative gift for a minimum donation of £7 each, which is how much it costs to feed a child for a whole school year in Malawi. As well as being able to drink from it, the mugs also have lids that allow them to be used as collecting cans.

“This is a fantastic way to raise awareness of what a difference a mug of porridge can make to the lives of so many hungry children in Malawi who are receiving Mary’s Meals,” says Dermot. “The beauty of this idea is that not only does drinking from this mug remind people of the important role which porridge plays at the charity’s school feeding programme in Malawi, it can also be used as a way of getting support to feed more children, giving them essential nutrition and an incentive to study.”

In Malawi, where the charity is celebrating a decade of feeding children, 20% of the primary school population receives Mary’s Meals. Each child is given a daily serving of likuni phala – a vitamin enriched maize porridge served in plastic mugs. Each child is responsible for their own mug, ensuring they get a fair portion every school day. Some carry them around their neck on a piece of string to make sure they don’t miss out.

“This alternative gift is symbolic, as it represents the simple mugs which are used to provide over half a million hungry children in Malawi with a life sustaining daily meal, which in turn gives them energy and concentration to learn,” Mary’s Meals’ Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow‎: explains. "For many children in the poorest parts of the world, they are unable to go to school because they are hungry, begging or working to get the next meal on the table. Mary’s Meals offers them a route out of poverty and the chance to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

“The global average cost for us to provide one meal is just six pence – pennies to us, but a lifeline to so many of the world’s poorest children.”

Jenna Elfman To Host Laugh For Sight Comedy Event

Jenna Elfman will host a special night of comedy for charity in March.

The Laugh For Sight LA Comedy Benefit will feature Kevin Nealon, Greg Fitzsimmons, Bill Burr, Pablo Francisco, Daryl Wright, Christopher Titus and many more at Improv, 8162 Melrose Av, LA on March 6. The event will benefit the Scheie Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.

Laugh For Sight is a non-profit organization located in New York City, whose goals are to raise funds and public awareness for retinal degenerative eye diseases – specifically retinitis pigmentosa, stargardt’s disease, and macular degeneration. The proceeds from the regular comedy events held by the organization benefit the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania and Guiding Eyes for the Blind – one of the top guide dog schools in the world.

Dynamo Joins The Big March Against Bullying

Celebrity magician Dynamo, who first used magic as a way to deal with his own experience of bullying, has joined the world’s first global virtual march to protect children’s rights and supporting BeatBullying's The Big March 2012 in an effort to unite the world against bullying.

50 Cent Visits Africa To Fight Hunger

The World Food Programme has been hosting rap music star 50 Cent during his trip this week to Somalia and Kenya this week, where he was able to see at first hand the fight against hunger in the Horn of Africa.

The rapper flew to Dolow in Somalia’s southern border region on Wednesday. Dolow is where thousands of women and children fleeing from drought and conflict have taken refuge. While at the Kabasa camp for displaced people, he saw women and children being screened for malnutrition, and visited a nearby school.

“What I am seeing is devastating — these women and children have risked everything to come to this Somalia camp, just to get food,” he said. “They need our help.”

On Thursday, Jackson visited a school in a Nairobi slum where he met children, many of them orphans.

“To meet those kids was so inspiring, they have nothing, yet they are so positive and optimistic. I want to do my part so they get food and an education. I hope more people will join me to help end this devastating situation,” he said.

In September, Jackson made a public commitment to provide one billion meals for the hungry. As part of his fundraising drive, he is donating to WFP money from the sales of a new energy drink, called Street King. For every unit sold, he has pledged to donate 10 U.S. cents, which covers the typical cost of food in a WFP meal.

WFP provides nourishing meals and snacks to improve concentration in the classroom and to encourage families to enrol and keep their children in school.

Big Names To Celebrate Muhammad Ali's 70th Birthday At Charity Gala

The cast of entertainers and sports icons slated to appear at Keep Memory Alive's 16th annual Power of Love Gala on Saturday, Feb. 18, in Las Vegas keeps getting bigger every day, though only a limited number of tickets remain for the celebrity-filled fundraiser.

Fans wishing to see what’s happening inside this one-of-a-kind 70th birthday celebration for Muhammad Ali — which will raise funds in support of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and the Muhammad Ali Center — will also be able to tune in to “Ali 70th From Las Vegas” on ABC on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. ET and 2 p.m. PT. Duchess Of Cornwall Visits Diabetes Facility, Meets War Horse Star

The Duchess of Cornwall saw how a charity is working to cure type one diabetes this week during a visit to Cambridge.

Her Royal Highness visited the Cambridge Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility at Addenbrooke’s Hospital to learn more about the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

During the tour of the facility, Her Royal Highness met Jeremy Irvine, star of Stephen Spielberg’s War Horse, who has type one diabetes. Irvine attended the event in a show of support. He was involved with trials of an artificial pancreas, which the charity is working on, in 2005 and 2007. He explained how technology helps him manage his type one diabetes while pursuing a hectic film career.

Afterwards, he said: “It was an honour to meet Her Royal Highness. Research and development have given me far greater freedom than 10 years ago and the research coming now will make sure type one diabetes doesn’t stop people following their aspirations.”

The Duchess also met children living with the condition and who have been involved with clinical trials. She told them: “You’re extremely brave. I’ve been reading about it and I had no idea how it can affect people’s lives.”

Her Royal Highness added: “I want to get more involved and help you all.”

Justin Webb, a presenter on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, also attended. His son, Sam, has the condition. He said: "This is a hugely important day to anyone unlucky enough to be affected by type one diabetes.

“The involvement of Her Royal Highness will help highlight the seriousness of the condition and bring us closer to a cure.”

Type one diabetes is a chronic, life-threatening condition which develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body have been destroyed and the body is unable to produce any insulin.

It normally develops before the age of 40, especially in childhood, and accounts for up to 15% of all people with diabetes.

Karen Addington, the charity’s chief executive, said: "We are extremely grateful to Her Royal Highness for helping us highlight this condition which affects more than 300,000 people of which 26,000 are children.

“There is nothing they could have done to prevent their condition and this visit will raise awareness and help us fund more research.”

The Duchess also visited Emmaus UK, a charity of which she is Patron. Emmaus UK works to provide shelter, jobs and opportunities to homeless people, and Her Royal Highness met the Cambridge community and visited its shop and warehouse.

Supermodel Bar Refaeli and tennis legend Boris Becker chose the heart of London on the eve of the Laureus World Sports Awards to unveil a new polo shirt designed by fashion house Shanghai Tang in support for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation's mission to use sport as a tool for social change and to help improve the lives of children around the world.

The elegant polo shirt, in dark blue or orange, carrying the Laureus name and the bold number ‘1’, was worn by members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, a unique collection of 47 of the greatest sportsmen and women in the world. Chinese characters on the back of the shirt spell ‘Laureus’ in Chinese.

The new shirt was launched in the shadow of world-famous Big Ben and overlooking Parliament Square, at Central Hall, Westminster, where the Laureus Awards Ceremony was held.

The winners of the 2012 Laureus World Sports Awards were unveiled at a globally televised Awards Ceremony in London last week. Among the highlights were a record-equalling fourth Laureus Award for US surfer Kelly Slater and a double success for Northern Ireland golf with both Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy being honoured. FC Barcelona at last won the Laureus Team of the Year Award after their fourth Nomination.

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic was acclaimed Laureus World Sportsman of the Year after his remarkable 2011 when he won three Grand Slam events – the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open – and took away the tennis world No 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal.

Former Brazilian international footballer Raí, now a campaigner for social justice, won the Laureus Sport for Good Award.

Clive Owen hosted the event. Among the other guests present from the world of entertainment and fashion were Bryan Ferry who performed on stage as well as segment host British actress Thandie Newton, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, American actor Luke Wilson and Israeli actress and model Bar Refaeli.

Proceeds from the Laureus World Sports Awards directly benefit and underpin the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which supports 91 community sports projects in 34 countries around the world, including five in London. Since its inception, Laureus has raised €40 million for projects which have improved the lives of more than one-and-a-half million young people.

Ten Prince's Trust 2012 Games Young Ambassadors met the British Prime Minister David Cameron at a reception held at 10 Downing Street recently.

The Prince’s Trust 2012 Games Young Ambassadors were invited to the Downing Street reception, which was held ahead of the Laureus World Sports Awards in London.

Also at the reception were some of the world’s most prestigious sporting figures, including world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, boxing legend Lennox Lewis, 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans, Formula 1 driver David Coulthard and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The 10 young people were all Opportunity 2012 Young Ambassadors, who are involved in sports and arts in their area and are inspiring other young people through the power of the 2012 Olympic Games.

They spoke to the Prime Minister and the sporting figures about their roles as Opportunity 2012 Games Young Ambassadors and their work in their communities.

Ryan Coomber, 21, of Peterborough, who turned his life around with support from The Prince’s Trust, said: “It was an amazing experience and I got to meet some fantastic people. Not only did I meet the Prime Minister but I chatted with Alan Hansen, Lennox Lewis and Arsene Wenger. They are inspiring people and it was honour to be in a room with some of the best sports people in the world.”

Annie Lennox recently blogged for Eco-Age.com about a certain “F word”.

“The term “feminism” has been twisted, smeared, and degraded over the years," she wrote. "While my generation of Western women have received the benefits of feminism, many of us recoil from the word, as if it was something to be ashamed of. The irony leaves me incredulous, especially when there is still so much more to be done in terms of women’s rights on a global scale. In my view, the F word urgently needs to be reviewed, revamped, reconsidered and revalued.

“When I encounter women born into and living in chronic and endemic poverty, in (so called) developing countries, who have no access to education because people cannot afford to send their girls to school, and education for girls is not looked upon as a priority, I envisage myself in their situation, and wonder how I could cope with the unimaginable challenges they face on a daily basis.

“When I consider global gender disparity in terms of human rights, sexual and reproductive rights, legislative rights, I find it absolutely staggering that so little has changed for so many for so long.”

The Minnesota Twins today announced that bidding has started on a one-of-a-kind auction to raise funds for the Minnesota Twins Community Fund at www.twinsbaseball.com. Fans can now bid on an official Major League baseball autographed by both reality TV star Kim Kardashian and soon-to-be former husband and Minneapolis, Minnesota native Kris Humphries.

“We have as far as we know, a one-of-a-kind item – a baseball with both of their signatures which we believe is best used to raise incremental funds for the good works of the Community Fund,” said Kevin Smith, executive director of public affairs for the Twins.

Amnesty International has announced that Roger Waters is supporting the organization’s campaigning on the Middle East and North Africa on his forthcoming ‘The Wall Live’ tour.

“It’s very important to me to have Amnesty along on this tour talking about the dramatic events in the Middle East and North Africa,” said the Pink Floyd legend. “In some small way, I want to ensure that people who come to The Wall Live take away a sense that human rights matter and barriers between people and their rights need to be torn down.”

In a shift in strategy, PETA – along with Stella McCartney – is urging fashionistas to shed not only fur but also leather this Fashion Week with a viral video exposé of the skins trade hosted by McCartney.

“As a designer, I like to work with fabrics that don’t bleed; that’s why I avoid all animal skins,” says McCartney in the video. “Please join me in exploring the huge variety of fashionable shoes, belts, purses, and wallets that aren’t the product of a cow’s violent death.”

As reported in the New York Times, the campaign, set to debut in Manhattan cabs, has had a bumpy start. Because style editors and buyers from around the world scurry between runway shows in taxis during Fashion Week, PETA planned to run a video blitz on taxi video screens—but VeriFone Media, which places the cab ads, refused to allow PETA to buy airtime, saying that the screens run consumer promotions, not cautions. Undeterred, PETA will launch the video on fashion blogs, via tweets from celebrities, and on the Facebook pages of PETA’s million-plus online activists.

McCartney’s video explains that cows killed for their skin are castrated, branded, and dehorned and have their tails cut, all without painkillers. In slaughterhouses, the animals’ throats are cut, and many cows are skinned and dismembered while they are still alive. And the toxic chemicals used to keep the animals’ skin from rotting harm workers’ health and can pollute nearby water supplies and soil, leading to increased rates of cancer among nearby residents.

“Showing a little heart” never goes out of style. That’s why actress Minka Kelly and iconic fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg are teaming up with Diet Coke and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) The Heart Truth campaign.

The goal: to raise awareness of women’s heart health educational programs. Five lucky Diet Coke fans will join these women for the star-studded Red Dress Collection Fashion Show tonight, February 8, which kicks-off New York Fashion Week.

This year marks the fifth year Diet Coke will play an active role in The Heart Truth campaign. Diet Coke is taking its efforts online, on packaging and on the runway to call attention to women’s heart health educational programs. Minka Kelly will join Diet Coke and walk the Red Dress runway in a custom Diane von Furstenberg dress.

Diet Coke fans walked their own virtual runway by using their social networks to “show their hearts” for the cause and entering to win a chance to attend the annual Red Dress Collection Fashion Show. Using the hashtag “#ShowYourHeart,” people shared photos of themselves wearing red via Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. The entries were judged, and the five best photos were selected. Minka Kelly then judged the five winning photos to choose one grand prize winner, who received a shopping spree with a style expert. All five winners will be attending this week’s event.

“I loved the creativity the winners showed in their photos, and now I can’t wait to show off Ms. von Furstenberg’s creation and raise awareness at the Red Dress Collection Fashion Show,” said Minka Kelly. “Heart health is important for women of every age, and it’s up to each of us to help spread the word to the women we love.”

In addition to the dress Minka Kelly will be wearing in the Fashion Show, Diane von Furstenberg created a limited-edition collection of Diet Coke aluminum bottles featuring her iconic prints. This year Garth was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame by Billy Joel.

Spotlight: Ryan Seacrest Foundation's Celebrity Supporters

Established by Ryan Seacrest, The Ryan Seacrest Foundation (RSF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for seriously ill and injured children through unique programs that utilize multimedia and interactive platforms to enlighten, entertain and educate.

RSF’s first initiative is to build broadcast media centers, named THE VOICE, within pediatric hospitals for patients to explore the creative realms of radio, television and new media. RSF’s aim is to contribute positively to the healing process for children and their families during their stay by developing these centers to bring an uplifting spirit to the hospital community. We believe access to multimedia experiences will bring patients exciting and stimulating adventures to encourage optimistic thoughts during treatment and for the future. It is also our intent to reach out to the community and involve students from local journalism schools, colleges and universities to provide them with the opportunity to gain first hand experience in broadcasting, programming and operating a multimedia center.

Spotlight: Selena Gomez's Charity Work

Selena Gomez is taking the world by storm; at just 19, she has already gained world-wide recognition for her role in the Emmy Award winning show ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ on the Disney Channel and has since starred in numerous films such as ‘A Cinderella Story’ and ‘Princess Protection Programme’. Not only can she act, but the young star can sing as well, fronting her band ‘Selena Gomez & the Scene’, which has had two platinum singles and sold over 1,350,000 albums in America alone. The teenage phenomenon has not only done all this but has also become UNICEF's youngest ever Goodwill Ambassador, when she was made spokesperson for the Trick or Treat campaign which worked to raise awareness of the plight of children in Ghana and has done a huge number of other activities for the charity.

Selena has travelled to the Congo with the ENOUGH Project to witness firsthand the difficulties that Congolese citizens are struggling with due to war, poverty and conflict minerals and made a PSA with Kermit the Frog to raise awareness of endangered amphibians (which can be seen here), half of which will be extinct soon if something isn’t done.

Selena recently joined other celebrities in strutting her stuff down the runway in Beverly Hills in aid of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where over $1 million dollars was raised for the cause.
