Charlize Theron Hosts Children's Benefit Auction

June 30, 2006 by Myrlia Purcell

Charlize Theron hosted an auction on June 27th to raise money for children in her native South Africa. The event in Los Angeles drew the support of other Hollywood celebrities, and raised $140,000 to help families in need.

The auction was attended by stars such as Lindsay Lohan, and items up for auction included a jacket from Will Smith, signed DVDs from Tom Hanks and an original Scarface poster donated by Al Pacino.

The Charlize Theron African Outreach Project benefits Oprah's Angel Network and helps support vulnerable children in rural South Africa.

Most of these projects are worthy; but not one of the clinics that are built or the food parcels handed out or the kids saved from AIDS will help a bit if those same kids are mown down in the streets 2 days later by criminals or if they are raped, traumatised and do not have role models who look out for them! This is the harsh reality of life in South Africa.

When will a celebrity with Charlize's clout speak out against crime and then actually DO something?

We are Guardian Angels, the world's largest and oldest volunteer public safety patrol organisation. We involve young people in crime prevention and teach them to serve as powerful leaders in their communities. If we get a new young member we put him/her through 4 months of strenous training and then teach them about communication, first aid, self defence, conflict resolution, law, global warming etc. We teach these young guns team work, planning skills and community upliftment.

The training costs them nothing and we then need to get them into some neat uniforms so that they are recognizable to their partners; the police, community policing forums and neighbourhood watches. The fund-raising consists of things like donation cans in shops.

These youngsters return to their communities as leaders in every sense of the word. They never refuse help and never turn their backs on a problem. They go on to become responsible adults who care about others. Without role models like us they turn to crime or accept any problem as insurmountable. Without our help they don't get jobs and never learn to use a computer. They can't talk to you without crass comments in every sentence. They turn to alcohol, drugs and gangs to feel a sense of belonging.

Projects like the Children's benefit auction are fantastic, but we need to focus more on the root causes of the problems in our society, else we are going to be fighting a losing battle.

Kindest regards
