Annie Lennox Leads Tributes For Journalist Killed In Syria

February 23, 2012

Annie Lennox has paid tribute to veteran American war correspondent Marie Colvin, who was killed – along with a French photojournalist, Remi Ochlik – in Syria earlier this week.

“I’ve just learned the terrible news that veteran war correspondent Marie Colvin was killed in the besieged Syrian town of Homs earlier today, after the house that she was staying in was shelled,” she blogged on Facebook. “Marie was one of those special people that made you stand in awe. Boundlessly courageous, and passionately dedicated to justice and human rights, exceptional and exemplary, she was simply outstanding. I am deeply saddened to hear that her life has been taken, and bow my head to her nobility, and everything she stood for. My profound condolences go out to her family and friends.”

Other stars to pay tribute to the journalists included Mia Farrow and Colin Firth's wife, Livia.

Over 7,600 people have been killed in Syria since violence began 11 months ago.

Thank you Annie Lennox for your moving condolences to Marie Colvin's family. You may have also issued a similar message to the family of Remi Ochlik who was killed with Marie. Hopefully their deaths will focus the world's attention on Syria, on Baba Amr where Marie and Remi died. Perhaps you could issue a message of solidarity to the wonderful doctors who are now looking after Paul Conroy and Edith Bouvier both injured yesterday. The people of Baba Amr, Homs and all the other centres in Syria being bombarded by Bashar Al-Assad's killing machines deserve our thoughts and prayers too.
