Dave Grohl has announced via Twitter that he will give away a signed guitar to a lucky fan who helps him spread the word about ALS Awareness Month.

Update, 13 May 2012: It appears the originating Twitter account was fake (see comments), so we have withdrawn this story and unlinked it from the rest of the site.

“Help spread the word about this awful disease,” the Foo Fighters front man tweeted yesterday. “I will send a signed guitar to one lucky retweeter.”

ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) – also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease – “is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually lead to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.” (ALS Association).
