Rocker Joan Jett was in New York this week to hand out free vegetarian starter kits to pedestrians on behalf of PETA.

The singer set up a stand at Union Square and 14th Street to hand out the kits, which are also available free at selected newsstands. The kit has everything you need to get you started on a meat-free diet – recipes, tips on eating out, health information and much more.

“I am a vegetarian,” she said. “So I avoid contributing to the major environmental damage that the meat industry creates. I hope that soon we can make sure that everything we do is earth-friendly.”

You can also get the kit online by clicking here.

Joan Jett is known for her work with PETA, and recorded a PSA which can be viewed here. Her recent Greatest Hits package was totally environmentally-friendly.

“Factory farming is one of the biggest contributers to one of the most serious environmental problems,” said the star. “The meat industry causes more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world.”
