Following her letter to French president Nicolas Sarkozky earlier this month, screen legend Brigitte Bardot has penned an open letter to US president Barack Obama voicing her outrage over laws that permit seal hunting.

The 74-year-old actress and animal campaigner used the letter to appeal to Obama to speak out over the hunting of seals in Canada. She said she has “immense hope” in Obama, “even if I know that he is in demand from all directions and he already has a lot to do in his own country.”

Bardot retired from acting in 1974. In 1986 she established the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals and raised three million French francs to fund the foundation by auctioning off jewelry and personal belongings. Since then she has dedicated herself to animal welfare issues, and has made countless donations to the cause, including $140,000 for a mass sterilization and adoption program for Bucharest’s stray dogs.
