Actor Bernard Hill – best known for appearing in films such as Titanic and Lord of the Rings – was one of 90 people who abseiled down a lighthouse in the UK recently to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The event took place in Southwold, with proceeds from the abseil going to the local RNLI lifeboat station.

It is the second time the actor has taken part in the event – he abseiled the same lighthouse in 2009, commenting: “It shouldn’t be a charity – it should be a state-funded institution like the NHS. It’s a mark of the quality of the people that volunteer for it because people would just die out there without their help. It’s a vital service. People don’t understand what the sea is about and how dangerous it can be, that in five minutes it can all change.”
