Martina McBride and her global volunteer group “Team Martina” paid a surprise visit to the Covenant House shelter for homeless youth in Newark, NJ, on March 1, 2014.

Team Martina volunteers, who assembled from 10 states and 2 countries for Martina’s concert with George Strait in New Jersey, treated the kids living at the Covenant House Newark shelter to ice cream, games, and prizes.

Then Martina spoke to the kids and surprised them with tickets to her show later that night in front of a sold out crowd. Martina donated enough seats for the entire shelter to attend the concert.

International president of Covenant House, Kevin Ryan, was on hand for Team Martina’s visit and he and his staff were able to attend the concert with the kids later that night as a group. “We can’t thank Team Martina, and Martina herself, enough for being here today,” said Ryan. “Martina has a big voice, but she has an even bigger heart. And the fact Team Martina volunteers from all over the country are here shows that our kids are not forgotten and that you care, and that means everything.”

Martina and her team also surprised the staff and kids at the shelter with a new karaoke sound system. Then Martina signed autographs and took photos with the kids.

Martina McBride’s global charity team, Team Martina, is a platform for thousands of country music fans interested in volunteering and helping the world alongside Martina. Learn more here and follow them on Facebook at Facebook.com/TeamMartina or Twitter.
