Oxfam are delighted to announce actor Michelle Dockery as its first ever Humanitarian Ambassador, helping the charity fundraise and highlight their work responding to emergencies around the world.

Last year Michelle travelled with Oxfam to Jordan to meet with Syrian refugees affected by the awful conflict; on her return Michelle helped launch the charity’s “12 Days of Giving” campaign, which raised vital funds to support refugees during the harsh winter. Since her trip Michelle has auctioned her Emmys dress to raise funds for Syria, and more recently supported Oxfam’s appeal to get emergency aid to those in desperate need in Gaza.

Michelle said: “Travelling with Oxfam and meeting families whose lives have been torn apart by the conflict in Syria, stripped of everything they know – just trying to get by each day with the very basics they need to survive – was utterly heart breaking. But thanks to Oxfam and the incredible support of the British public, they’re not alone. I witnessed first hand the incredible work Oxfam do every day ensuring those people have the support they need to get back on their feet.”

This announcement comes on World Humanitarian Day, which aims to recognise and celebrate those who face danger and adversity in their work helping others. Oxfam respond to around 40 humanitarian disasters a year. Right now there are over 28 million people in need of humanitarian aid in the Middle East, Oxfam is there providing life saving water, sanitation, food and cash transfers to help people in desperate need. The charity’s humanitarian response also currently includes South Sudan, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia.

Michelle adds: "It is clear that the world is currently experiencing a huge number of humanitarian emergencies and there are millions of people who are suffering as a result, with nowhere to turn and in desperate need of support. I saw for myself how Oxfam won’t stop until the last person has access to the basics needed to survive in an emergency but, I also know they cannot do that without the continued support and generosity of the British public.

“I feel very honoured to be given this role as Humanitarian Ambassador for Oxfam. I hope that in accepting this role, I will be able to help Oxfam raise awareness of their work, what they need to help those in crises and to show those who do donate what an amazing difference their support can make.”

Mark Goldring, Oxfam’s CEO said: "Michelle’s contribution to helping raise vital funds for Syrian refuges and awareness of their situation over the last year has been unwavering. She is passionate, empathetic and eager to learn more about how we work to support in the best way she can.

“On World Humanitarian Day, when we celebrate the heroism and commitment of those that work to help support people in dire need, we are thrilled to announce Michelle as our first ever Humanitarian Ambassador. It is an important role that will undoubtedly help us achieve our ultimate goal of keeping people and hope alive in times they need it most.”
