Located in Seaside, CA, Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School of the Arts (MLK School of the Arts) is a vibrant learning environment in a district with a strong commitment to arts education. MLK School of the Arts is part of Turnaround Arts, a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts that introduces a high-quality and integrated arts education to strengthen school reform efforts. Turnaround Arts was founded in 2011 under the Obama Administration of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH), a White House advisory committee on cultural issues. With support from Turnaround Arts, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District has more than doubled its music offerings, initiated an art and science DzEco Ambassadordz program in the fifth grade, and hired a Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator to connect teaching artists and nonprofit arts organizations to its schools.

In 2015, MLK School for the Arts introduced music classes to all of its students and local teaching artists provided an additional 60 hours of arts instruction for the entire school. MLK School of the Arts has also partnered with The Arts Council of Monterey County, The San Jose Opera, the Carmel Music Society, the Sunset Center, and the Monterey Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival.
