British actor/comedian Russell Brand has donated £3,000 (US$5000) to charity in the town he grew up.

The star – who recently announced his engagement to Katy Perry – donated the money to the East Sussex Rape and Incest Crisis Centre in Thurrock.

“We got in touch with his agent and asked if he’d help us because he was a local boy and grew up in Thurrock, and he did,” said Sheila Coates, director of the centre. “We were really touched.”
