French First Lady and singer Carla Bruni attended a meeting on poverty and female mortality with Queen Rania Al Abdullah, Wendi Murdoch, and Laura Bush for the Symposium on Advancing Global Literacy in New York in 2008.

Bruni wrote an open letter in May 2009 on behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi, asking for her release from the Burmese junta.
